When all the rules are shades of grey Empty When all the rules are shades of grey

When all the rules are shades of grey
And referees have rigged the game
The winning move is not to play.

The dreams and shiny goals they lay
Before you seem a clear aim,
But all the rules are shades of grey.

Although success, distinction may
Enflame your dreams of wealth and fame,
The winning move is not to play.

You can't control the price you pay,
The final cost to stake your claim,
When all the rules are shades of grey.

And though you race a long, long way
You end up boken, lost and lame;
The winning move is not to play.

Though proudly players jeer away
Capitulation holds no shame;
When all the rules are shades of grey
The winning move is not to play.

Just had to go look up villanelle. Complex stuff. Would be way to chicken to try that, but it pays off. Villanelle, it seems just what it is, so slight but powerful. Keep trying because its a great form. As for the piece. What a neat turn of phrase! and the controlled verses so complement its apt and ironic logic. Love the use of grey, after all its the colour which is not on a chess board - ties into the theme of the game, but life is not a game and is so much more complex than the black and white capitalist concept of aspiration which is dealt us. At least that's what I get from this. It strikes me really, this concept. I find it hard to deal with. Going to be thinking about this piece some more. thanks.

Thanks. I found this theme hard to get inspired about really. The concept of winning is so loaded - in our post-modern world are there really any winners or losers? It's linked to the death of the hero I guess. How many people can we unequivocally hold up as worthy of true respect? I guess this was partly why Mandela's death was so poignant - one of the last universally agreed upon heroes.

^On that note, I just posted something along those lines. Thailand at the moment is full of dubious heroes. "The best lack all conviction, while the worst /
Are full of passionate intensity."
